I Ride: Looking
Hi all,

New joiner to the boards and I am looking to buy a sportbike in the very near future. I've been looking at bikes for about 4 months now and have kinda narrowed it down to 2 that I really like.

1. GSX-R 1000
2. Z-14

Now I know these are kinda like apples and oranges and is very difficult to compare. I know the GSX-R has a shorter wheel base and is more app to turning a.k.a. track riding, and the Z-14 is the Kawasaki answer to the 'Busa, meaning longer wheel base and prone to very fast straight riding. Since this will be my first bike to own, not to ride, I was wanting to get input and pro's and con's on both styles of bikes to help me make my decision. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

First of all, welcome to the board. :welcome

Second of all, you've never owned a street bike before? what's your experience on bikes?

lol, sorry, I was a sheltered child. Parents would not let me own a bike.

My riding experience has been borrowing friends bikes over the years, mainly cruisers 750's and 1300's. I ride when I can. My wife's dad owned a 750 and we used to ride as much as we could. I'm not what you would call a regular rider, but far from a newbie. I have ridden mainly within city limits but have done a few highway treks of more then 150 mile streches. Hope this helps you, help me. :up

Man, to be honest with you. i wouldn't pick either one of those bikes. i know you've "narrowed" down your selection between these two. but if you've only ridden cruisers a handful of times and you've never owned a sport bike. i don't think picking the biggest baddest thing out there would be a wise choice.

2 reasons.

1: the bike is stupid fast... both of them? they both have more power than 99% of us will EVER use.

2: with all that power, you'll be timid and intimidated by the motorcycle and that will lead to you not learning on your bike the way you need too.

My suggestion,

Get a Ninja 250. it's a great bike to start out with as far as ownership goes and then when you're comfortable on that thing, you can move to a 600cc bike. There's no sense in starting off on the biggest baddes thing out there...

Personally I believe both are going to be too much {yes a rider can decide not to use all the power available but the tempation and/or possibility of a mistake is an ever present danger} for a new or reentry rider, but, as for your question............

the 14's got a lot more horseses than the 1000, it's a lot heavier than the 1000, and kaw's are traditionally VERY touchy on throttle input. between the two i'ld suggest the suzuki for a newer rider, and the Kaw for a new rider with a death wish. :-k BOTH WILL HURT YOUif your not very careful with what you tell the bike to do!

How big are you? If you are very tall, I can see maybe wanting a bigger bike for a large frame. However, if you have never owned a sport bike, start smaller and work you way up. I would hate to see you get hurt, seriously. Both bikes are crazy fast and will be way more than you are used to. I am not saying you wont be fine, you very well may be, but, just when you think you have the bike mastered, it will hurt you. Whats wrong with a Katana, a Gixxer 600, ZX-6, hell, even a 1200 Bandit? The reason a smaller bike is suggested is because you need to learn GOOD habits that will translate to other bikes. Starting on a big bike will hinder you in some respects. Have you taken a MSF course? You asked for opinions, we are just concerned for your safety.

There is a 2002 Bandit 1200s at action toys for 3k. Not a bad way to start off.

I totally understand, and that is why I posted the questions here, I really do want answers from more experienced riders.

I am approx. 5'-11"
Wt. - 340 pounds
Larger framed, longer in the torso, little shorter in the legs
Age - 44

Not saying that I have totally out grown the want to push a bike or my body to the limits, but have mellowed a little with age, but what guy really grows up completely. :twisted

Yes, I've been to Action Toys quite abit and have seen the 2002 Bandit, but the 'Busa '07 for $7999 with 840 miles really caught my eye, there were also a couple of other bike there I possibly would consider also.

I will always recommend the YZF600R as a first bike.

*Bigger than a 250 and plenty of useable power.
*Will hang with most bikes in the twisties
*Not going to be a drag strip king, but 99% of traffic is easy to dust.
*Heavier than most 600's which actually makes it a pretty stable bike in the wind
*good all around bike to learn whatever you want to learn
*much bigger framed than the newer 600's and even my R1

Pretty cheap to own also.

First off, Welcome :up . Good to have you around. Now as for the Bandit, and not because it's my bike of choice. This would be a bike I would by again, plenty of torque and enough horses to get you down the road. I have ridden other sportbikes and they are to much for me. Be careful in your choice...............mike.

that vfr would be a sweet bike. plenty of usable power, larger size bike and great looks too.
imho, that vfr smokes the busa and zx14 in looks, but maybe not the gsxr 1k

With your build may i suggest looking into the triumph's, I believe they're a little narrower in the seat (easier to get your feet down) and lean a little more towards the torque instead of horsepower. with the power map of the triple falling in between the v and in-lin 4 i would expect it to be little easier to control throttle inputs. Just an idea on what i've heard, never rode a triumph myself maybe someone who has can correct me if i'm wrong.

i love the ninja's through and through, but unless you're doing drag racing, i don't see the point in owning a busa or 14R. If you feel that you are an experience enough rider on SPORTBIKES i would say go for a 1000cc bike, but if your not a very experienced rider go for a 600 or 750 bike. Has plenty of power, yet more forgiving in the throttle than a 1000.

It sounds like a 750 would be perfect for you since you already have riding experience, but the choice is yours.
